Umbrella Organization for World Heritage in Switzerland
Founded in 2009, this umbrella organization brings together UNESCO World Heritage sites and their stakeholders to promote the promotion and enhancement of these sites. Through a holistic approach, it strengthens cooperation among the participating stakeholders and combines the protection of World Heritage sites with their sustainable management.
Swiss Parks Network

Swiss National Commission for UNESCO
According to the UNESCO Constitution, each Member State establishes a National Commission. The Swiss UNESCO Commission (SUK) is Switzerland’s National Commission.
It was established in 1949 as an extraparliamentary commission following Switzerland's accession to UNESCO. It consists of 15 members appointed by the Federal Council. The SUK serves as a liaison between UNESCO and Switzerland.
Academy of Natural Sciences
SCNAT and its network are committed to promoting a sustainable society and science.
They support policymakers, government agencies, and the business community with their expertise and foster dialogue with the public.
Swiss Geoheritage Commission (SGEK)
The Swiss Geological Heritage Commission (SGEK) of SCNAT is dedicated to the protection, research, and sustainable use of geological heritage.
Geodiversity, as the foundation for biodiversity and cultural diversity, is at the heart of their efforts.
The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is tasked with ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources such as soil, water, air, quiet, and forests.
It is responsible for protecting against natural hazards, safeguarding the environment and human health from excessive stress, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity and landscape quality, and is responsible for international environmental policy.
International
UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed according to a holistic approach that encompasses protection, education, and sustainable development.
Their bottom-up approach—which combines conservation with sustainable development while involving local communities—is becoming increasingly popular.
Officially established in 2014, it is a nonprofit international association of UNESCO Global Geoparks and geoparks professionals. The Global Geoparks Network is UNESCO's official partner for the operation of the UNESCO Global Geoparks.
The GGN was originally founded in 2004 as an international partnership established under the auspices of UNESCO. Its purpose is to develop models of best practices and establish quality standards for regions that integrate the protection and preservation of Earth Heritage sites into a strategy for sustainable regional economic development.
European UNESCO Global Geoparks: Territories of Resilience
European regions are working together to preserve and promote their geological heritage through the integrated and sustainable development of their territories.
International Geodiversity Day: October 6, which was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021 following a grassroots campaign by geoscience organizations around the world.
Geodiversity is all around us and includes the non-living components of nature, such as minerals, fossils, soils, and landscapes. Geodiversity Day is a global celebration that brings people together to promote the many aspects of geodiversity and its importance to society.
