Good to Know

The most important basics:

  1. Regional Sponsoring Organizations:
Swiss geoparks are usually organized as associations or foundations and are based on the principle of regional cooperation.
  2. Cantonal and Municipal Land-Use Planning:
A geopark’s activities must be integrated into cantonal and municipal land-use planning. Geoparks often coordinate with existing protected areas, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, nature parks, and the tourism strategies of the destinations.
  3. Federal Support:
The federal government can support geo-projects through programs such as the New Regional Policy (NRP) or Innotour (SECO).
  4. UNESCO Global Geoparks:
A region that meets the national and international criteria may apply for the UNESCO Global Geopark designation. After a positive review by the cantons and the federal government, the application is forwarded to UNESCO. Recognition is granted by the UNESCO Commission.
