Switzerland currently does not have a national geopark program recognized and supported by federal authorities.
There is a structured process for recognizing an area as a UNESCO Global Geopark that takes into account both national and international requirements . The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), together with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), has defined the criteria and procedures for this purpose.
To date, no UNESCO Global Geopark nominations have been submitted in Switzerland.
Requirements for a UNESCO Global Geopark Nomination in Switzerland
To be recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, an area in Switzerland must, among other things, meet the following requirements:
- Geological heritage of international significance: The area must contain geological sites and landscapes of international geoscientific significance.
- Clearly defined perimeter: The area should be a contiguous space that is clearly demarcated.
- Existing and Recognized Management: The area should already be recognized as a park of national significance, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or a cantonal protected area.
- Management Plan: A comprehensive plan that promotes conservation, education, sustainable development, and tourism is needed.

Steps Toward Recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark
The recognition process is divided into several phases:
- Feasibility Study: Analysis of geological conditions, regional support, and the institutional framework.
- Preparation of the nomination dossier: Detailed documentation that meets all UNESCO requirements, including a management plan, partnerships, and educational programs.
- Review by the cantons and the FOEN: The dossier is reviewed by the relevant cantonal authorities and the FOEN.
- Submission to UNESCO: After a positive review, the dossier is forwarded to UNESCO.
- UNESCO Evaluation: UNESCO experts conduct an on-site evaluation and decide whether to grant recognition.
Financing
Since 2020, there has been clarity regarding the potential process for applying for designation as a future UNESCO Global Geopark. The application must be self-funded by the respective project sponsor.
Future funding for UNESCO Global Geoparks will be based on collaboration among local stakeholders, including municipalities, cantons, the tourism sector, universities, and other partners and organizations.
